With the Lich King’s defeat, the War against the Scourge was finally over. For over a week the frozen wastes of Northrend were a sote for celebration and merriment, as festivities were held all over the continent, ranging from the Alliance’s stronghold of Valiance Keep to the celestial city of Dalaran. Back home, great feasts were held in honour of the soldiers who have laid down their lives for their loved ones and veterans were welcomed back as exalted heroes.

Yet quite possibly the war’s greatest heroes’, the Knights of the Ebon Flame’s, accomplishments were left unhonoured, tales of their heroic deeds left unsung. Their glorious victory against the Lich King felt hollow, as they did not accomplish their task laid out before them. They challenged the vile death god’s rule as much for their own sake, as for Azeroth’s. They sought to destroy Arthas in order to right a wrong that has left their Order devastated.

Before the War against the Scourge, the Order’s leader, Lord Thalos was visited by the Lich King in his dreams. For months Arthas has poisoned Thalos’s mind with false promises of power, his corruption slowly creeping into the heart of the mighty warrior. In the end, Thalos could not resist the lure of the Scourge any longer and has left the Ebon Flame to serve his new master. At the moment of his betrayal the Eternal Flame – the symbol and the source of the Knight’s mystical strength and tenacity – flickered and expired. His defiance has broken the ancient oath laid out by the original Knights of the Ebon Flame, ten thousand years ago. The oath in which the ancestral Knights swore to serve Azeroth in death and beyond. The oath that bound the souls of every Knight to the Eternal Flame, denying them peace in the afterlife, binding them to our world so they may continue their service. On the eve of Thalos’s submission the bond that connected the Spirits of the Flame to the Order was severed once and for all.

Although, months later, Thalos was rescued from the grasp of the Lich King, his soul redeemed by those he loved, the Spirits of the Flame remained under the dominion of the Scourge, chained to the Lich King’s relentless will. It became the Order of the Ebon Flame’s sacred duty to bring down Arthas and set their spectral brethren free.

However, when they finally confronted the Lich King atop Icecrown Citadel and claimed victory… nothing has happened. The spirits did not show themselves. Had they not achieved their goal? Were they too late? What fate befell the noble souls of the countless Knights that came before them? Worried and confused, the Order quickly and silently left Northrend behind, refusing to celebrate their victory, refusing to be honoured for their deeds.

They returned to Kalimdor, the ancient land of the night elves and travelled back to their home in the distant Darkshore in search for answers. Under the guidance of Lord Thalos they returned to the Order’s sacred grounds, where once the Eternal Flame burned bright and new initiates went to undertake the Ritual of Induction.

These hallowed grounds were a favoured place of the spirits, their presence always the strongest near their beloved Eternal Flame. Here the spirits would hear their leader's voice clearly. Here, the Knights would find the answers they were searching for.

In times long past, the shrine known as the Grove of Ancients was a place for a magnificent Highborne temple. Few remember it, even fewer know its history. It was at that temple where, under the guidance of Ana’rathiel Firesoul, the first Knights of the Ebon Flame swore a blood oath in the presence of the moon goddess, Elune. They swore eternal servitude to Azeroth and in return were granted the Ebon Flame, the magical fire that burns in every Knight, that binds us all together. They swore that for as long as the Ebon Flame remained alive they would never forsake their duty. Not even in death…

Ten thousand years later this sacred place was revisited by the mortal champions of Azeroth, the victors of the War against the Scourge. After their triumph over the Lich King, the present Knights of the Ebon Flame sought answers on the whereabouts of their spectral brethren, and how to bring them back to the Flame, so they may be reunited once again. However, what was about to be revealed to them, would change the destiny of their Order forever.

At the hour of their atonement, it was Lord Thalos who called out to the Spirits of the Flame, pleading them to appear before their champions and return to the Flame. The Spirits chose to show themselves to the Knights, lead by immortal soul of Ana’rathiel Firesoul.

It was supposed to be a joyous occurance, a cause for celebration. But there were no triumphant cries, no tears of joy. The Spirits themselves appeared distant, withdrawn, their eyes filled with deep, deep sadness. It was clear that this was not the happy reunion the Knights were expecting.

Then the First Keeper began to speak. He recited his and his brethren’s suffering at the hands of the Lich King, their hopeless struggle as the vile runeblade Frostmourne ate away at their essence. With pride in his heart, he praised the names of the Flame’s champions who bested the challenges of the Lich King and ultimetly triumphed over the Scourge. And he thanked the Knights for releasing them from Frostmourne’s icy grasp.

„However” he said „despite your heroic efforts and your triumphant victory… the Flame remains extinguished. And the Spirits shall not return.” His words bit hard. The Knight’s hearts were heavy with dissapointment. Why would the Spirits not return? Did they not do what was expected of them? Did they not do everything to win back the favour of the Flame? Thalos suffered the most. This was supposed to be the moment of his redemption, the hour of his atonement for his sins. Why would the Spirits deny him his peace of heart? Why do they want him to continue suffer the burden of his misdeeds, after all he has accomplished? His heart filled with rage as he continued to listen to the spirit of Ana’rathiel.
„With the last Keeper’s wavering of faith, his ultimate descend into darkness, the ancient oath that binds us all together was broken. Elune granted us her power, under the condition that the Ebon Flame would remain unblemished forever. That its Knights would never lose their sense of duty. And that its Keeper would forever remain loyal to Azeroth. The promise was broken, and thus the blessing will be no more.”

Thalos pleaded them, begged them, he demanded them to stay. „Surely, there is a way to restore the Flame! Surely, there are means to retake the oath! To pledge our services to Azeroth once again! That you may remain with us!” he pleaded, but his words fell on deaf ears.

„There is no way, child. The Ebon Flame is no more. We have served the Flame for a thousand generations. Finally, we will know peace in the afterlife.”

Then it dawned within Thalos: what if the Spirits don’t want to return? What if they are hiding from him the means to restore the Flame, the means to shackle them to this world once again? What if they are willingly denying him his redemption? What if they are denying their champions their rightful legacy of Elune’s blessing? Unable to control his anger any longer, Thalos’s heart was engulfed in righteous fury and lashed out at his spectral brethren.

He would call them cowards, weaklings, ancient and sad wisps unable to perform their duty, bestowed upon them by their deity. He cursed the Spirits for their weakness, his scarred pride lacing his voice with venom.

The Spirits, angered by Thalos’s impertinence, turned their backs on the Knights of the Ebon Flame and withdrew from the mortal world to realms unknown, with the promise that Order of the Ebon Flame would never hear of them again.

Thus ended the story of the Ebon Flame. However, just as the winter marks the end of life, so does spring mark the beginning of new life. The Order of the Ebon Flame was never defined by a group of people bound together by a mystical fount of power. The Flame did not help them defeat the Scourge and kill the Lich King. The Flame did not triumph over an Old God and the Titan’s greatest creations. It was always the people, the Knights and their strenght, their tenacity, their sense of duty, their faith and their honour that accomplished these impossible feats. Over the time the Order of the Ebon Flame became so much more than the remnants of an ancient Highborne order. It became a brotherhood, a family where its Knights found friendship, camaraderie, acceptance and sometimes even love.

That day was the end of an era for Ebon Flame, but at the same time the beginning of a new one. A time has come for reflection, where the Knights would have to find their own places in the world and carve a new future for their Order… and maybe all Azeroth as well.
